Discoveries
Edwin Hubble made a huge impact on astronomy, and science in general. He proved that other galaxies
besides the Milky Way, existed, and that all galaxies have a positive redshift. It was previously believed that space was limited to the Milky Way galaxy.
Hubble’s discoveries completely changed our view of the universe.
Between 1922 and 1924, Hubble identified large stars in several spiral nebulae. His observations with the Hooker Telescope provided evidence that these nebulae were much too far away to be part of our galaxy and were actually entire galaxies outside the Milky Way. Vesto Slipher, an American astronomer, had found evidence for this argument almost a decade before.
In 1927, Edwin Hubble discovered that all galaxies have a positive redshift. This means that all galaxies are moving away from the Milky Way, and at an increasing speed. This implied that the universe was expanding.

"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science."
-Edwin Powell Hubble
Hubble also arranged the different groups of galaxies, which is now known as the Hubble Sequence.
This diagram shows Hubble's observations of galaxies and their redshifts. He also inferred that most galaxies had a similar size so galaxies that appeared smaller are further away.
This is a diagram of our universe expanding. As you can see, the galaxies are moving apart.
